About Shrigonda:
Shrigonda is an ancient town settled on the banks of river Sarasvati a
feeder of river Bhima. Shrigonda was formerly known as Chambhargonda
and is located in Ahmednagar district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The place is
described as Santanchi Punyabhumi (Holy Land of Saints) and was also
known as Shripur during ancient times.
Shrigonda has a long history tracing back to the 13th Century. Shrigonda
today is a Tehsil (Taluka) head quarter and also a Panchayat Samiti
block office. Shrigonda town has a Municipal Council as the
local self government.
Shrigonda town has many ancient monuments like Hemadpanti temples,
Lakshmi-Narayan temple, Vishnu Dashavatar temple and two huge Mansions
belonging to Shinde's of Gwalior.
Sant
Shri Shaikh Mohammad Maharaj is worshipped by people of all faiths and
is the patron saint of Shrigonda. Mohammad Maharaj Yatra (Annual Fair) is held on Phalgun Shuddha
Ekadashi (Feb-March). This fair is the biggest in nearby places and is
attained by more than 25,000 devotees over a period of 3 days.
Shrigonda has a good educational facility for primary and secondary
education in both English and Marathi mediums. Shrigonda also has a few
junior colleges and two senior colleges imparting education in Arts,
Commerce and Fundamental Sciences. However Shrigonda lacked educational institutes in fields like Law,
Engineering, Medical, Pharmacy, etc. until "Parikrama Group of
Institutes" emerged in Kashti 14 kms. from Shrigonda.
